Writing club hosts writers of color reading and open mic

Our event got a great preview in The University Daily Kansan! Check it out here: Students writers of color will share work tonight at Spooner Hall

Y’all remember writing club?

Wil, Erin, and I formed the Student Writers Workshop at the University of Kansas in August 2015. We met once a week throughout the academic year on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. to workshop one or two stories, plays, or poems from our members. We quickly became a real, actual thing – with eight to 12 of us and a loaf of banana bread to share per workshop. As president, I even used Student Senate student organization funding to produce a literary zine, 8 p.m. Tuesday, and distribute our work in a real, tangible form across campus.

We realized, however, that while we had good gender and queer diversity, the majority of our members were white. Crystal and I decided to create a space for KU writers of color. Check out more on our Facebook event here.
